SEA FOREST LIFE
Posidonia meadows as carbon sinks of the Mediterranean

A Life + Project to assess the Posidonia oceanica sink in the Mediterranean Region

Posidonia oceanica, the main seagrass in the Mediterranean area is often called the lungs of the sea due to the carbon sink and oxygen production properties. Reduction in the volume and extent of Posidonia oceanica was noticed during the last decades due to adverse impacts on the natural habitat of this flora. The result of the decrease in the Posidonia meadows in the Mediterranean could accelerate the process of climate change and produce a s negative economic effect.

As a preventive action Sea Forest Life project was initiated within the EU-LIFE programme. The main objectives are measurement of the present carbon sink, recreation and prevention of the species elimination, identification of the standards and evaluation methods, distribution of information.

The project is led by D.R.E.AM. ITALIA Soc. Cooperativa Agricolo Forestale (coordinator), CarbonSinkGroup S.r.l., Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche - Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero - Unita Operativa Oristano, Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale, Paragon Europe, Ente Parco nazionale dell’Arcipelago di La Maddalena, Ente Parco Nazionale dell'Asinara - Area Marina Protetta, Ente Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni, Università della Tuscia, Dipartimento per l' Innovazione nei sistemi biologici, agroalimentari e forestali, WATER RIGHT AND ENERGY FOUNDATION, FONDAZIONE DI PARTECIPAZIONE ONLUS. The Sea Forest Project has a total budget of 3,025,382. The project is co-financed at 50%.

Paragon Europe is proud to be a member of this consortium. Participation in this project fits within the overall commitment of Paragon to address climate change mitigation through its projects and activities. The role of Paragon in the Sea Forest project includes (1) the Development of the Sea Forest Model in Malta and Mediterranean region (2) Engagement of the public and private stakeholders in the project activities and (3) the creation of a Communication campaign to increase awareness in the defined target audience.
